There are many generic medical ID bracelets and jewelry tags available today, however they are generally limited by their size to the amount of information that can be displayed on them and because of their small size, they are sometimes overlooked by emergency personnel during a crisis. The Medic Alert® emblem can indicate to first responders that a special condition exists but most of your vital information requires a phone call to retrieve. In an emergency, the minutes it takes to make that call could be critical to your care. Medic Alert® membership is $35 for the first year with a $20 annual renewal fee. Medic Alert® also has "Sponsored Membership" to assist people unable to afford membership.
MedicAlert® also has a product called MedicAlert® E-HealthKEY. According to MedicAlert® it is "...primarily an instrument to manage your medical information, use in emergency situations will be limited."**
It allows you to record and store a host of information including, but not limited to, your family and medical history, laboratory values, medications, vitamins and supplements, doctors and insurance information. You can also record and graph lab values, blood glucose levels, weight loss, cholesterol levels, and other data, create personal reports, track fitness goals and store medical images such as X-rays, MRI's and EKG's. If you need to have a comprehensive health record then this may be a product for you. It requires you to join MedicAlert® and costs $84.95 with a $20.00 fee every year thereafter to maintain your information in their repository.
**It is important to note that the computers used by most medical and emergency personnel are firewalled or require administrative privileges to prevent installation of any software. This means that in an emergency, products that require installation of proprietary software or readers may not be usable by those services, possibly wasting valuable time critical to your care.
